Faithful to Preach
September 15, 2019 Speaker: Eric Baker Series: Center Church
Passage: 2 Timothy 4:1–4
1. Re-read 2 Timothy 3:14-4:4. If possible, listen to the sermon(s) again.
2. Looking back over your notes from this week’s sermon, what was the most important truth from God's Word? Was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged you, or confused you? Any questions?
3. I read an excerpt from a book this week that cautioned against using the term ‘sharing’ the gospel because it almost automatically puts us in the mindset that we are looking for people interested in what we are sharing or offering. At Mission Church we believe in God’s sovereignty to overcome hardened hearts that are hostile to the gospel so we can, as this book encourages, announce the gospel boldly. We can only do this if we know the gospel, truly.
Pretend you are asked ‘what is the gospel?’. Write out your response.
4. Read Matthew 4:4, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, Hebrews 4:12. What do these mean at a practical level? Why is this good news? How does this give you confidence to go announce the gospel? What are some other examples?
5. If you were looking for a church how high would you put the faithfulness of the preaching on the list of musts?
Now be honest. How are we doing at Mission in regards to faithfully preaching the Word? How could we improve?
6. We all know the Prosperity Gospel is heresy. What are some other false gospels that are gaining traction currently in our culture? Using scripture, how can we combat them?
7. Remember that the context of this letter to Timothy is in regards to people in the church. This means that verse 3 applies to some church people. Have you ever been guilty of having ‘itching ears’? What are some things that seem believable being ‘preached’ by the culture? What questions do you have about them?
